Trend Report: Hard Deco

Hace rato que no hacia un post de los elaborados de los que me pasaba dias investigando para poder escribirles algo decente y digno de leer, que cosa que justamente el penúltimo día del año fue el día en que decidí hacerlo.

Y sinceramente, para mi ha sido justo y necesario hacer éste post en específico. En la última S/S 2012 temporada hubo una tendencia que me llamo mucho la atención (mucho es poco). Estoy seguro que muchos de ustedes han ya notado un cierto sentimiento de nostalgia en las colecciones presentadas mas o menos 8 temporadas pasadas (F/W 2009 si no me equivoco).

Desde entonces, hemos visto un tour de force tan ecléctico que una máquina del tiempo se queda pequeña al lado de él. Años 50, el MOD de los 60, y de vuelta a la los estilos liberales de la post-primera-guerra-mundial y el intermedio entre la Gran Depresión.

El Art Deco es una de esas tendencias artísticas que dejó marca en tanto aspectos sociales como culturales. El mismo comenzó en Paris en los años 20 y floreció mundialmente en los años 30. Se desarrolló en áreas como la arquitectura (Chrysler Building & el City Hall, ambos en New York) hasta en la cinematografía.

Como toda corriente artística, tiene sus origenes en otras corrientes precursoras, como el Neoclacisismo, Constructivismo, Cubismo y el Modernismo. Se origina principalmente en la simetría de las figuras geométricas y el rigor de culturas antiguas como la babilóniica, egipcia, azteca y asiria.

It’s been a long time since I wrote my last trend report. Coincidence that I’m writing this during the penultimate day of the 2011. It was necessary for me to report this trend cause I’ve seen so much walking down the runways & because of time I had no chance to write about it, it was kind of frustrating, to tell you the truth.

I couldn’t help but notice the nostalgic appeal some designers have been showing these past collections, starting more or less 8 seasons ago (specifically during F/W 2009). We have been part of a tour de force that makes a time machine look like an old microwave. Going from the ladylike 50’s, the MOD of the 60’s & back to the liberal style of the 20’s & 30’s, time called the fresh-air taken between the smoke of WW1 & WW2 & The Great Depression.

Art Deco was one of those artistic movements that made a social & cultural impact & here comes the approach that really made my eye pop (it has always), how fashion can make such a big impact in society.

Los años 20 fueron marcados por la liberación de la mujer, economía venidera & grandes avances tecnológicos, todo ésto llevo a un nuevo modo de vida de lujos & modernismo progresivo. Estos dos aspectos son los que han enmarcado uno de los grandes canones de la mujer Deco: The Flapper.

Como les dije arriba, la moda en ésta época hizo un cambio muy grande en la sociedad & viceversa, los nuevos estilos al vestir se vieron inmensamente influenciados en grandes pasos en los derechos de la mujer, por ejemplo, durante los años 20 & 30, muchos países abrieron las ventanas de voto a la mujer (USA, Italia, Inglaterra, Brasil, España, etc.)

Durante la 1era Guerra Mundial muchos hombres tuvieron que partir a las trincheras de guerra, mientras tanto, una gran cantidad de mujeres tuvieron que tomar el rol de monarcas de la familia y salir a ganar dinero trabajando. Lo que acabo en que la mujer dejó su imagen tradicional y se rebeló hacia una identidad mucho más femenina y atrevida.

Las mujeres subieron los niveles de sus faldas y se armaron con licencia propia, de modo que ya no dependian de los hombres para ir a hacer mandados ni diligencias, shopping incluido obviamente. Y aqui es donde entra nuestra chica Flapper.

Hay muchas características de la moda Flapper, se puede mencionar que habia una silueta algo andrógina por asi decirlo, ya que no habia definición de busto, cero curvas, los vestidos llegaban a media pantorrilla o a la rodilla, formando entonces una silueta tubular, aparecieron los Cloches, los flecos dieron su primera aparición en ésta época, formas angulares en los vestidos y medias bajas, nada de pantimedias.

Como te dije, usa alguna de estos estilos y acomódalo a tu cuerpo y a tu estilo personal, no creo que quieras salir de tu casa viéndote como Mata Hari o Mae West, sería el peor de los casos! Ya mil veces hemos escuchado que la moda se trata sobre divertirse y digo, estamos en los últimos días del 2011, listos para recibir nuestro último año en la Tierra antes que el mundo se acabe y terminemos rostizados en el centro del planeta, asi que diversión debería ser la primera cosa que debes tener en mente!

The 20’s was framed by women’s liberation, prosperous economy & great advances in technology, all of this brought a new type of lifestyle of luxury hedonism & progressive modernism. Both of these aspects were the ones that entitled one of the biggest fashion characters : The Flapper.

As I told you, what I love the most about this trend for 2012 is the parallelism that it had with the 20’s, big changes are coming to surface our times (gay rights, political & environmental & the so-talked End of the World), changes that resonate the issues that were being treated at the time, women’s rights, for example, many countries were opening opportunities for voting for women such as Spain, Brazil, USA, England, Italy, etc.

During WW1 many heads of family had to part away to the war trenches & in many cases, loose their lives just to defend a flag, meanwhile, back at home, women were obliged to take the bulls by the horns & take charge of bourgeoisie & their families, thing that contributed to the freedom & rebellion of traditional canons by which the women had always been seen. Revealing a more feminine, seductive & edgy identity to the female figure.

Hemlines went up & licenses were accepted for women, that way they could go to work & run errand without masculine permission, obviously, shopping was included, & here is where our Flapper girl enters the scene.

Between the so many characteristics of the Flapper style, I will mention the ones that are most easy to acknowledge & imitate in our days without looking like girl that had the Halloween-party-date mistaken. Androgyny was present those days (not in the Andrej Pejic form though…), the dresses didn’t accentuate boobs nor hips nor waist at all, in contrast to the ladylike trends that were been worn in the years behind, the dresses reach mid-calf & in other cases, the knee, forming then a tubular silhouette , cloches made their first appearances & fringe came out to stay, angular shapes in dresses & rolled down stocking was the hot thing to do.

Like I told you, use some of these styles & accommodate them to your body shape & personal style, you wouldn’t want to go out of your house looking like Mata Hari or Mae West, in the worst of cases. Fashion is about fun so HAVE FUN WITH IT, I mean we are in the last days of 2011, ready to welcome our last year on Earth before been grilled by a meteorite (how dramatic can I be!?) fun must be the thing to do!

So have yourself a splendid New Year’s Eve, kiss someone, drink a lot of champagne & enjoy yourself!

Vergara&Vergara Coutures is one of the best designers in Panama these days, they won Best Collection at FWP so I was very pleased to work with these guys cause I’ve believed in their work from the beginnings.

Here is a little collaboration we had for their last collection called Baroque Manifest, aside from the photos I was the producer of their fashion show which include special lights arrangements & a short video that was presented as a pre-lude during their show, here it is as my Christmas present :)

I've recently paired up with Felix B. Maduro (our equivalent to Selfridges or Macy's) to shoot they're social networks campaigns, there are gonna be 3 mini campaign per-month & this is our first one.

Since our country is a little bit isolated from the fashion scene (TG it's starting to make bigger steps) color blocking, trend that was for this summer, well... summer in Panama starts in January so Felix has brought the trend for our summer...

I will be showing you the next shoots we will have, we have a new one being shot this Friday, it's very teenage-summer which means Billabong & Roxy, very excited about it because it is not my usual things, so it's a challenge, let's just hope I will pull it of...

Retro Glam Night

My excitement was not normal that day, I was super eager to see what Leanne had for us, since every one was waiting for that day to come, for real!

I started my day in class (I know, lame) presenting a final, as soon as I finished there I teletransported to Casco Viejo cause the girls of Espacio Vintage had my outfit (horror story, I didn't have anything to wear until 2 hours before the event). It was all a complete rush but it all paid off, I ended up mega happy with the photos' outcome & thankfully, have received great feedback, it was all great teamwork, looking forward to work more like I did this time.

Since I like to share most of my work with you guys here is a behind-the-scenes-video of the photos that are posted below, the video was made & edited by my brother in law.

Continuing with the event... OMG I HAD SUCH A GREAT TIME! Despite all the wardrobe delays & traffic-jam-tantrums I had before getting there, it was a night to remember (sort of... I ended up consumed by vodka & champagne & forgot most of it ahhahah) The most important thing is that it really felt like the 50's were there, not in essence, but the vibe was really alive.

The stands were great, some already-known-names by this blog were there like: Alessandra Grau, who made a special capsule collection inspired by our aboriginal people, Greta Bayo, who made tees with images of great divas like Liz Taylor, M. Monroe, Audrey, etc. Espacio Vintage, Diablo Rosso, Sara Bassan, between others...

Miss Moss presents...

Work, work, work it's been the only word in my mind these past few days. Finals are not my allies, never ever! Thank God red wine & good music have been by my side to avoid the stress.

& TG my exams are almost over & there's something big to celebrate. I want to talk to you about Miss Moss Presents...

It's not a fashion event, well, sort of.. it's not a conventional fashion bazaar, it's more of a gala where you can go spend your money in great, luxurious things & drown yourself in champagne 'til you drop, quite an inviting scene right!?

Well, since the end of Glamavida, Leanne, one of the creators, found herself inspired & driven by many fashion events she attended in her native London, where the MOD & 50's inspired catwalks made her realize that it was her duty to come back to Panama & do something glamourous for us.

That's exactly what she did! That is how Miss Moss Presents... came to life. As I said, it is a themed gala that will be held at one of the most gorgeous maisons here in Panama, La Casa de la Municipalidad, the night of the 14th of December, not to sound cocky or snob-ish but, it IS the most exclusive event this ever done here in our country, not only because of the place or the theme (oh yes, 50's is the theme, how delightful huh?) but also because the attendants are the, let's put it this way, coolest people in the city...

If you are wondering about these pictures, I just felt so inspired by the clothes & music that I've researched (it is a must to go dressed 50's inspired) that I told Leanne I had to do something & these are that came out of that :)

Again, I would have been powerless with the guys that helped me with everything! They are the PIMP crew (it has nothing to do with the MTV show). PIMP goes for Producciones Independientes de Moda Panameña [Indie Fashion Productions from Panama, something like that], they rock! follow their Facebook fan page if you want to see more of their work.

So we finally had our taste of a real shopping night. It was such a fun night (at least I had a blast) & I’m sure that people were happy with all the discounts & offers that retailers were giving. There were others that had very cool stuff in their shops so the costumers were not bored while going trough the racks, for example Puma, they had pool tables & football tables, it felt like a man cave (which was sort of confusing since almost all of the attendants were either girls or gays) but they really nailed it.

The only thing that I would say is that shops would’ve been so much greater if they had done bigger things OUTSIDE of the shop, that way people in the mall would’ve felt the excitement the whole event was about. I hope they do it next year, bigger, better & cooler.

normally in sundays I would just spend the entire morning in my bed, sipping tea & readying all my magazines, but today was an exception. Melissa Shoes is a Brazilian brand (one of the ones that are part of the Brazilian Boom that’s going on right now) whose main canvas will always be plastic.

they are so funky & cool that they become sort of a statement shoe, with many many collaborations under their sleeve (Gareth Pugh, Vivienne Westwood, JPG, Jason Wu, between others…) they are being included in the closets of respected fashion gurus & editors.

Continuing with my sundays (oh lazy sundays…) today was the launch of the brand in Panama, exclusively sold at Espacio Vintage. There was also a mini presentation by Fernanda Quiros (the girl that’s in the post above) & Gisela Sánchez (the girl who’s in the post below). Aside from these shoes you will find all kinds of cool things at Espacio Vintage & in case you have clothes that you want to alter to make them into a fashion smashion you kust take them there & they will work their magic!

I will make sure you know more about this awesome boutique!

Fashion that Connects, that´s the name of the latest campaign by Steven's Panama, one of the biggest department stores here in Panama (think of a toned down version of Sears). With this campaign Steven's aims to get in touch with their costumers in a closer & friendlier maniere, making them feel part of the Steven's family.

The leading lady in this huge campaign couldn't be anybody, so they brought Mariana Bayon, the first Mexico's Next Top Model, all the way from Mexico DF, making this one of the coolest campaigns this year.

I had such a good time in the backstage of the shooting that I obviously took my camera & prepared something for y'all...

Hello fellas! Hope you had a great Halloween, I was grounded so my only way

to fete it was with a movie marathon of bloody flicks.

Aside from that I'm pretty excited about the upcoming weeks.

If you are into fashion you MUST know what FNO is & if you don't you'd better

start considering other fields, cause this is not for you. Well, FNO has been une reussite totale around the globe! & here in Panama we couldn't be left behind.

That's why Status Magazine has stepped up to the plate & has been organizing our very first version of Status Fashion Night, which will work exactly like FNO does, the only difference is that instead of being celebrated outdoors, we are doing it inside a mall, which I think will concentrate more the excitement & the people obviously.

It will take place in Multiplaza, our best mall here. November 15th, a soiree that will be held by more than 40 stores that will surely knock it out of the park, so consider it a date you won't like to miss!

So I've been away for some time & I'm really sorry for that! Been working hard at the studio, now I have two more jobs as a Vlogger for an upcoming über-cool platform that's gonna be huge here in Panama (it's called ThinkTank) where me, Olguita & Veronica will be in charge of the Fashion section (we will be like the new Robert Verdis & Heidis &Tyras of Panama), and another thing that I'll be talking with you later (very cool btw).

One thing that's been keeping me pretty busy these days is Dashing Diva Night, it's a shopping night, full of glamour, fashion & glitter. It'll be a very exclusive evening, from 4pm to 10pm (open Moët!!!), you'll have 6 hours a mini runway show by national & international designers, the best brands & the most beautiful people in town!

One of the sponsors of the evening is my studio, NOVAstudios, so once they told me we were gonna be doing the TV spots & promos I knew we had to do something fabulous! Here are the 3 versions, the first one is the official promo for social media, the second is the TV spot that will be appearing in RedCarpet & MixTV, the last one will be appearing in the huge huge huge screens in Via España & Calle 50, pretty exciting huh?

I love the fact that this whole collection makes me think of a high fashion Death Eater (yes, I’m a HUGE HUGE HUGE Harry Potter fan). When these dresses were coming down the runway I was fantasizing of Bellatrix Lestrange killing Sirius in one of these ensembles… well, that won’t happen, sadly.

Carlos Then is a Dominican designer who´s been invited to Panama many other times but this has been by far his best presentation. A clash between noiré modernism & gothic brushes, he surely made a statement during this Fashion Week Panama.

One thing that was not on his favor was the overuse of textures, we have to have clear that in the creative world editing is everything. Too much sheer & some dresses had an unnecessary drop waist, which made the girls look a little like Spongebob Squarepants, but I will give him a golden star in his forehead for making an effort & trying to end the routine of same boring things.

NOTE: girls look so much hotter & sexier when they’re modeling without a bra, stop being so annoying & show what Papa God gave you!

I’m going to start this with a very important sentence, not every designer who’s been in the business for a “very long time” is a great designer, at least not in Panama.

Really awful. Jaime Luna it’s considered one of the “big guns” but it seems that this “Big Gun” only shoots water ‘cause while all his dresses were coming down the runway my eyes were been aggressively hurt, as if someone was doing voodoo on me. Purely costume, this collection looks much more Pirates of The Caribbean gone crazy, & I’m not trying to be harsh on him but to be an eye opener.

Just took some photos, I wasn’t able to sit there & take all the photos of these … things. I had to go to the bathroom to get my shit together.

I liked this collection, it may not be the best of the bunch, some dresses were off, other’s were on, but for me, the most valuable point was technique. I loved the way she sewed the dresses, I think it is called macramé stitching, isn’t it? Correct me if I’m wrong. Another point for her it’s how well she represented Panama in her dresses, it was not a obvious way, it was much more reserved & refined, the last looks reminded me of Bocas del Toro at the beginning of last century during Sunday when people dressed up to the nines to go to the Lottery game in the middle of the province but mixed with Caribbean sexiness & modesty.

This is gonna be a great post :) I wanted to work with Greta since I started my blog for 3 reasons.

Every FW & MacroFest she delivers a cohesive & well made collection. She always works with a concept which makes everything easier & funner.
She has a solid clientele that are loyal ‘til the world crashes down & that’s all because of how much effort she puts into her work.
She’s fun & super nice, one of the nicest “fashion persons” here in Panama.

So for this FW collection I helped her with her ad campaign, Ciao Edie! This collection was inspired by Edie Sedgwick (if you don’t know who she is, Google is waiting for ya), a lot of glitter & satin fabrics. But what I liked the most was the fact that I saw Edie in most of the pieces, they evoked that party-girl-chic spirit she had. I’m gonna show you the runway pics & then the ad photos, some of the outtakes which are not retouched but they are somehow as beautiful as the other ones, some of the backstage (video & photos).

Note: the collection was styled by Caro Tarté, a dear friend & the make up was Ana Victoria Esquivel’s duty.

You all know that the key to have a cool style is to master the art of easy, effortlessly cool, I-just-put-on-the-first-thing-I-saw-in-the-closet. That task would be so much easier if your closet is full of Grau pieces. Grau means gray in German but her clothes have nothing to do with the boring shade, she makes clothes that accentuate women body like no other, with the plus that they are perfect for a Sunday shopping as well as for a day at work, no wonder why she is one of my favorites.

PD: at the end of FW, La Prensa (Panama’s biggest newspaper) priced her with the Best New Creator award & she got the cover of Revista Ellas, the most read magazine in our country.

Ok, I’m gonna start this just by saying that I was extremely excited about this collection & at after it felt extremely disappointed. He was one of the main attractions this FW, everyone was excited to see what he brought, I was not the only one who had a bad taste after the show.
There was way too much black, we were barely at the middle of the show & everyone was bored as hell, gotta admit that the last dresses were gorg, but if you are a designer who has dressed girl like Bundchen, Longoria, Beyonce, Bullock & Hayek you must or should entertain your audience through the whole show. Just saying. National designers did things that were way more fun.

Sorry for my absence these days but my computer decided to go on a 2-weeks vacation (very cool #sarcasm). Since I’m like a month late I’m just gonna shorten the text.

Some of the dresses were worth watching, some of them weren’t (specially the bride dress, is it harsh if I say that looked like icing from a cake?), the thing is there were dresses that I liked, I think you’ll notice that they are kind of pageant-ish. that’s not bad but I believe that as a designer you should aim further.

I liked the flowy dresses, did not like the styling & definitely did not like that the models walked two times with the same outfit with the only difference that the second time they had a hat on, it was fun at first, but then it got REALLY boring, it got so boring that I stopped taking pictures cause I didn’t want you to be as bored as I was.

She even hired a Caribbean band, very cool of her. As I said before, she needs help with the styling, it’d suit her perfect the next time. On the positive side, nice clothing.

Ganexa FWPanama 2011 -Day2

I’m making a come back, well, sort of, cause I still have 3 finals to ultimate. I am truly sorry that I’ve been this absence. As you know I’m divided between two careers & my own business, plus many projects that are coming up :)

This time I’m sharing the talents of our fashion newcomers, Ganexa (my ex university, where I studied a year & a half of photography). I’m dividing the post in 6 mini parts, each one of them guided by the designers name & my … opinion?

Well, here we go…

first is Isabel Chacin

pure white is the color of the season, right on target. I liked the flapper vibe, I will always be into that, some of the fabric choices were not really of my liking, but for a fashion student it was pretty good.

next is Keyris de León

there’s just one look that I didn’t like cause of the shape, besides from that, really flattering pieces with a futuristic vibe (don’t you see one of the Jetsons here?), really liked the colors & kind of color blocking collection now that I see it, our guys are really paying attention to what’s going on internationally :)

we continue with Verónica Larre

We get to the point where a concept serves as a double-edge sword, it can get a little costume-ish. I shot some of Veronica’s work & she is s super creative girl, she is capable of doing great things out of concepts & creative guidelines, we worked so well. Again, I see The Jetsons ghost throughout the whole collection, but I would have loved to see a high fashion version of The Jetsons.

I see many women I know inside these clothes & I like that. Another positive thing about this collection is the fact that coming from a senior student, it doesn’t look like it, these clothes are ready for boutiques sales & people will actually spend money on them, I am sure of it. Nice colors, perfect for our country.

almost wrapping up with Londy Mendieta

Believe it or not (I think you all know) I’m all about darkness & gore-ish things. I have a thing for serial killers & skulls. My top designers are Lee (all hail to McQueen), Gareth & Rick. So it’s no secret that I hit jackpot with this collection, I WANT IT ALL!!!

Apart from the subjective factors, it is sartorially amazing. The details are amazing & I loved the juxtaposition of flowy fabrics with those chaquira armors, the Rocky Horror shoes (did you noticed how look-a-like they are from the Prada sandwich shoes?).

Great to see that new guys are making a notable effort :)

& we conclude with Josse Karlos de Janon

Everyone went BA-NA-NAS for this mini-collection (all of these collections are actually half their graduation presentations) & there’s no doubt why. Just laying it down like this, this is the most avant we panamenian have gone ever & I am very glad that someone from my generation took the first step.

It is super curious ‘cause I’d buy almost everything BUT the 2nd look, which means women clothing is more appealing than the one the guy’s wearing & that’s exactly what Josse Karlo wanted to portray, I am actually chatting with him as I write these words & the main goal of his clothes is to blur the line between genres & invite everyone to embrace the human (note that I said human, not men or women) nature we hide inside us.

It’s an idea that I totally support since our society is moving more & more towards the union of society, that shows us that the clothes do have a profound effect in and from social & political statements. I say it again, I am very happy dared to do something like this & I just hope he’s not the only one in our Panama.

With this I end up this post ‘cause my warm bed is waiting for me, tomorrow I have to present my Theory of Image final & am really excited about it, made a magazine with my group & I was in charge of the fashion (how unpredictable of me!), the cover & the cover feature, worked really hard on it, I’ll see if I upload the photos of it later, once I finish with Fashion Week :(

Fernanda Quirós FWPanamá 2011 -Day2

PURA JAGUA is the name of her debut collection. It has the “original” factor all over itself, relying on one of the most known indigenous cultures here in Panama, Emberá Wounaan. The fabric choices were something that I really liked, for example, our climate is known for its humidity & bipolarity, so Fernanda chose cotton as her canvas, except for 2 final dresses made of chiffon. PURA JAGUA is the result of a whole month & a half of hard work, in which Fernanda & her team created the concept & brainstormed all the ideas for the show (she showcased a video made by Alfredo J. Martiz, music specially composed by Oren Ghitis & the creative direction by Juan Anibal Upegui).

Something that cannot be missed was the styling, which came full circle with the help of Flower in Pot by Alexandra Correa. Other thing that must me highlighted is the reason why it is called PURA JAGUA, it comes from the Purism, noted in the architecture in France in the 50’s , “I was inspired by Le Corbusier & its juxtaposition with the Emberá Wounaan culture, its colors & structures” Fernanda told me. You can clearly see it in the sharp lines & purism of the clothes, the whites & the structure of some of the pieces, á la Phoebe Philo.
